Art Enhances Education
Art is organic to everything. You see it in the graceful lines of a bridge, in a bright burst of fireworks, a beautifully landscaped park, in the shapes you make of clouds. Art is inescapable, and the reason for that is we house brains wired for creativity.
Research tells us that when we stimulate the left (analytical, rational, logical, objective) and right (creative, intuitive, emotive, subjective) hemispheres of the brain, we can actually grow more cells and build a healthier network of neural connections. Engaging in new experiences and developing new interests can build confidence and increase our capacity for learning and success. Left-right brain thinking makes for a well-rounded person. Think Leonardo da Vinci, artist and inventor.
Creative imagination leads to innovation and has the power to take us down a different path. We don’t know where we’ll end up, but the journey teaches us something new about the world and about ourselves. In the early 1800s chemical reactions to light gave birth to photography. In the 1950s, James Watson and Francis Crick built a model, a metal sculpture, to explain the double helix for DNA. To quote writer/filmmaker Jean Cocteau, “Art is science made clear.”
At Boise State University we want students to experience the arts because we believe in developing well-rounded intelligence; therefore, we are partnering with the local arts community to offer discounts to students, encouraging them to enhance their education.
Public engagement in the area’s vibrant culture can also build greater community, create a greater appreciation for different perspectives, and generate dialogue and new ideas. The Chinese proverb that says, “I hear and I forget; I see and I remember; I do and I understand,” magnifies the truth that art and education work beautifully together.
